How does the LTE work on the 3 Do we pay for it at all Is it limitedthrottled What is reason to use WiFi over LTE aside from signalspeed if applicable. Also curious if theres any way to open a wifi hotspot from the cars LTE Would be cool to have a secondary device (iPad or other) to use for Waze, or music streaming since my entire collection is saved already with Apple Music (otherwise Im going to have to start a new collection with Slacker, if Slacker even supports collections.).
That device wouldnt have to be LTE enabled if the car could provide the hotspot for it, which would be nice. Lte Free Cell ServiceFor the Model S, Tesla said that you would get 4 years of free cell service, and they would start charging after that. ![]() Havent seen anything about how this works for Model 3, but I would assume for now it will be the same as Model SX. You cant use the cars LTE to create a Wi-Fi hotspot; Tesla doesnt allow this on the Model S, so I would be surprised if they did for Model 3. Part of the reason for this, presumably, is to keep all the LTE bandwidth available for whatever the car needs. You can create a Wi-Fi hotspot on your mobile device and access that from the car, but that doesnt really buy you anything unless the mobile device is getting a much better cell signal than the car. With Tesla sending up their first two test satellites to get the ball rolling on their own space-net, they may end up providing this service in the future at no cost to Tesla owners or potentially for a minimal fee. If theyre not considering this already, they should be, itd be a great perk for owning a Tesla and would likely give them more granular control over security of the networks as well as the rates at which they can provide a stellar (pun intended) service to loyal customers. However, the thought of retrofitting 400,000 cars for this seems daunting. Id guess it would be baked in to future versions of the cars, but that wont be for at least three years. They need to loft something like 12k microsats into LEO first too. The great thing is that they can launch them alongside paid cargo, like the Spanish Paz geostationary satellite yesterday. Being LEO (low-Earth orbit) birds means the latency and link margins are much lower. I cant believe that after so many cars being sold, we still dont have a definitive answer. Doesnt Tesa tell you exactly how the cell service works when you pick up your car. Embedded cellular modules like those in cars are on very specific types of plans with cellular operators in order to control the amount of network capacity they use and hence in turn control the cost back to the car manufacturer. If people could tether their handheld device or tablet to the cellular service of the cars telemetry system it would completely undermine the business construct used to make such a system cost absorbable by the manufacturer. Lte Manual There WasBuried in my LEAF user manual there was a clause somewhere that said if abnormal traffic was detected on the embedded modules cellular service it would be disconnected. How this would be policed I dont know but the clear message is the SIM is there to support the normal connectivity requirements of the car and nothing else. There was a document screenshot that floated around about a year ago that said that the Model 3 with the premium package comes with 2 years of free LTE. As far as I know there has been no information found that says what happens after 2 years or what the options are if you dont get the premium package. Lte Upgrade To LTEMy Model S came with 3G in April 2013 and I paid 500 to upgrade to LTE when it became available.
